Federal authorities have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
