A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
