Nearly 25,000 households in southeastern Queensland found themselves lacking electricity on Monday morning after severe thunderstorms passed over the area, producing powerful gusts hitting 109 kilometers per hour.

Substantial Ice Stones and Broad Impact

Residents observed large ice chunks as large as 7cm in some areas. Weather authorities confirmed that different parts across Queensland had been hit with substantial ice precipitation.

Response teams were focused on reestablishing power throughout the impacted areas, with approximately seventy teams deployed to address the numerous electricity disruptions.

Southern State's Weather Woes

At the same time, around 1,000 energy customers in the southern state also experienced energy failures after the metropolitan area recorded its wettest day in 18 months.

Rescue organizations received 598 calls for help across the area, mostly for building damage but also for collapsed vegetation and flooding.

• Hoppers Crossing area - various assistance requests
• Wyndham area - 179 help reports

At one point on yesterday, in excess of 28k energy customers in Victoria were without power.

Meteorological Predictions

Moist weather were forecast to persist along significant areas of the state's eastern regions this next several days as a weather pattern continued to attract humidity against the coastal areas.

The following day was forecast to be the heaviest precipitation period, with persistent thunderstorm potential anticipated across various areas of both regions.

Safety Concern

Public health experts cautioned that there was an increased chance of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the northern rural areas, specifically given the ongoing climate situation.

This caution comes after previous incidents where comparable situations led to significant health impacts in the area.
